Beadle and Tatum (1941) established the one gene–one enzyme hypothesis using the bread mould Neurospora crassa. They induced mutations by X-rays and found each mutation blocked a specific metabolic step, implying each gene codes for one enzyme. This work won them the Nobel Prize in 1958.
