James Fenimore Cooper (1789–1851) wrote The Spy (1821) — a historical novel of the American Revolution — and is often called the 'first great American novelist.' He is best known for his Leatherstocking Tales, including The Last of the Mohicans. Washington Irving was a predecessor but primarily wrote essays and sketches; Hawthorne and Poe came later.
