This refers to the Co-operative Principle, proposed by philosopher H. P. Grice (1975). According to Grice, conversational exchanges are governed by the assumption that speakers are co-operative — they contribute what is required for the conversation to progress. He proposed four maxims (Quantity, Quality, Relation, Manner) that speakers normally follow. When maxims are flouted, conversational implicatures arise.
