Hipot testing applies elevated voltage (typically 1.5–3 kV AC or 2–4 kV DC for mains equipment) between primary mains circuits and secondary/chassis earth (or between isolated circuits) to verify that the insulation can withstand overvoltage without breakdown. All primary conductors are connected together, and all secondary/earth conductors are connected together, maximising stress across the insulation barrier.
