Schwann cells are the glial cells of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) that produce the myelin sheath by wrapping their plasma membrane repeatedly around the axon. In the central nervous system (CNS), myelin is produced by oligodendrocytes. Microglia are the immune cells of the CNS; neuroglial cells is a general term; nerve cells (neurons) do not produce myelin.
